Opuntia humifusa (Raf.) Raf.

Many people are surprised to learn that Connecticut has cacti, but the prickly pear is found in all eastern states except for Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Prickly pear is, however, rare in Connecticut, and the state has listed it as a species of special concern. The leaves have many small, barbed hooks that are painful and difficult to remove.
